Marilyn's Thyroidectomy Day 4 - November 15

Sunday. We are still here at TMC. I went to church in the morning but went back in the PM to watch Pacquiao defeat Cotto with Marilyn. Marilyn's calcium levels have decreased post operation but is expected to return to normal soon. But for now, she has to swallow 9 big calcium tabs a day until the calcium can be produced by her body normally.

Tomorrow morning she will be discharged and we will go home.

Marilyn's Thyroidectomy Day 3 - November 14

Today’s the best day in terms of mobility. Marilyn now walks around and moves about unassisted.
Her strength is now back (and so is her sense of humor). Around 8 o’clock in the morning her brother and mom arrives and the usual kumustahan ensues. After a few hours her intravenous was replaced by a heploc and the tubes, that were designed to get rid of the excess blood (and whatever else), sticking out of her neck were removed. Now she only has a thin 1 x 5 bandage covering up her scar.

While this was all happening, my mom arrived and brought some of the things we needed. We talked and talked some more and had kare kare delivered from Max’s.

I'm sleepy now. Good night.

Marilyn's Thyroidectomy Day 2 - November 13

My wife finally arrived in our room around 8:30 PM last night. She had a big bulky bandage on her neck.

This morning (Nov 13) she ate some solids already but shifted back to soft diet after the dressing was replaced on her neck. A little rest, and she went back on solid food. She has difficulty swallowing though and when she coughs, which is due to the tubes put in her mouth during the procedure, it is also very painful. But the doctors said that it will be painful during the first 24 hours then the pain will gradually decrease afterwards.

Late afternoon, the nurses put a heploc and removed the IV fluids.

On a lighter note, the food here is great! I liked the lemon butter fish fillet they served for lunch as well as the banana cashew desert last night. The nurses and doctors are kind. The general atmosphere from the hospital staff was warm.

The night was capped by a pleasant visit from ladies from Asian Baptist Clearinghouse.

Marilyn's Thyroidectomy Day 1 - November 12

Marilyn was given an IV as per OB's instructions around midnight and was advised to refrain from eating anything.

Morning came. She put on her robe and was checked once more by her battery of resident OBs. After a few minutes she went into her hospital gown and was picked up and brought down to the third floor for prepping. The procedure should last from 10PM to 2PM. I accompanied her down.

While waiting, Sam A and his wife Jen was also in the hospital.

I'm still waiting for some news. Last time I checked, around 1:45PM they said that the operation is still ongoing. I made a request that they notify me once the procedure is finished.

Tito Caesar arrived to help with the MDR for Philhealth.

3:45PM Doctor Jarin just came by to break the good news. Marilyn's procedure has just ended -- successfully. The thyroid's mass's initial anaylysis was benign but we will wait for final word after 4 days. Marilyn is now in the recovery room. Lord willing she will be joining me in Rm. 534 in 4 hours. She did well. Baby is safe as well. But please continue praying for quick recovery.

Marilyn's Thyroidectomy

We've started the admission processes around 7PM and were in our room I think around 8PM. The room attendant who led us to our room was very accomodating. We settled in, and after 5 minutes, Marilyn gets her blood pressure 90/60. After a few minutes, 2 resident doctors from hematlogy came and interviewed Marilyn about her medical history. After yet a few minutes, OB 1 then OB 2 does the same history check. As of this writing the anaesthesiologist just talked about the benefits and risks. Marilyn will be fasting starting 12MN. She will get an IV around 7AM tomorrow.

The procedure will start around 10AM tomorrow, November 12, 2009.

We're praying and hoping for the best!
